</div>Easter is coming around the corner. We all know that <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/religion/christianity/easter.shtml">Easter</a> is the day to celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
However, how does it associate with Bunnies, Chicks and Eggs nowadays? Well, bunnies, eggs, chicks and Easter gifts in gardening hats are stemming from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paganism">pagan</a>. They were incorporated into the celebration of Easter separately from the Christian tradition of honoring the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead.<br />
<br />
Easter eggs are special eggs. It is a pagan symbol of the rebirth of the Earth in celebrations of spring and was adopted by early Christians as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus. Just as Jesus Christ broke out of the tomb on Easter morning, the yolk of the egg breaks out of its shell when cracked. The oldest tradition is to use dyed or painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is to substitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jelly beans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">The Easter Bunny is a character depicted as a rabbit bringing Easter eggs. Rabbits are fertility symbols of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_history">antiquity</a>. Since rabbits give birth to large litters in the early spring, these became symbols of the rising fertility of the earth. In legend, this creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children on the night before Easter. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
Hence, the tradition of making nests for the rabbit to lay its eggs soon followed. Eventually, nests became decorated baskets and colorful eggs were swapped for candy, treats and other small gifts.<br />

The massive earthquake and tsunami that struck the north-eastern coast of Japan on March 11, 2011 has robbed many off their lives and tens of thousands left homeless and in despair, struggling to rebuild their lives once again. Do spare a thought for the many in Japan who no longer have a family or loved ones to go home to, let alone a roof over their heads.<br />
<br />
We at 123RF.com would like to extend our sincere condolences and prayers to the victims of this calamity. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of innocent lives, displacement of families and the homes of many that were destroyed beyond recognition. As part of our humanitarian efforts, we would like to offer our heartfelt support to the survivors through <a href="http://www.blogger.com/portfolio/123rfcares/1.html" target="_blank" title="123RFCares - Donate to Japan Tsunami Relief Aid"> 123RFCares - Tsunami Relief Fund.</a><br />
<h2><br />
</h2><h2>Here is how it works:</h2>We have set up a special account called "<a href="http://www.blogger.com/portfolio/123rfcares/1.html" target="_blank" title="123RFCares - Donate to Japan Tsunami Relief Aid">123RFCares</a>", with the aid of our team of designers and specially invited 123RF Contributors. We have populated this portfolio with images exclusively donated for a worthy cause.<br />
<br />
When you download any image from this account, you will be contributing towards the relief effort. All commissions that this account receives will go to the <a href="http://www.redcross.org.hk/en/disasterrelief_prepard/international_projects/JapanEQ/fundraising.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Hong Kong Red Cross">Hong Kong Red Cross</a>, particularly for the Tsunami Relief Efforts in Japan. At 123RF, we pledge to match the commissions dollar for dollar in aid of this noble humanitarian cause. The proceeds will then be wired to the <a href="http://www.redcross.org.hk/en/disasterrelief_prepard/international_projects/JapanEQ/fundraising.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Hong Kong Red Cross">Hong Kong Red Cross</a> on a monthly basis until April 10, 2011. Thereafter, plans are also underway to extend similar campaigns in aid of other humanitarian causes in the future.<br />

<li>Channel A: consist of colors from red to green, and </li>
<li>Channel B: consist of colors from blue to yellow</li>
</ul>Conversion to Lab mode is useful for preserving the original color value while enabling change to certain aspects of the image. In terms of sharpening an image, lesser artifacts and noise would be produced, whilst ensuring color data are unaffected. This ultimately contributes to better quality prints during post production.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Example:</b></u><br />
Image below may already contain subtle artifacts and noise. We want to sharpen objects in an image without increasing the effect or visibility of those unwanted elements and also in a way that does not affect the original colors.<br />
<br />
A brief note on Unsharp Mask before advancing:<br />
Unsharp Mask is a filter that sharpens objects in an image, or in other words increase edge contrasts to objects in an image.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-00_081212012750.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-00_081212012750.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
Amount (%): Determines the amount of edge contrast.<br />
Radius (pixels): Increase depth of contrast.<br />
Threshold (pixels): Smooths the sharpening effect.<br />
<br />
Let's begin with this image.<br />
<b>Original Image</b> - Image ID: <a href="http://www.123rf.com/photo_778937.html?referredBy=fai&src=123rffai" target="_blank">778937 </a>© Stephen Orsillo 123RF.com<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-10_081216210103.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-10_081216210321.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Go to <i><b>Image > Mode > Lab Color</b></i>. Please ensure layer is flattened.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-11_081216210123.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-11_081216210439.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<i><b>Ctrl+Click</b></i> on Lightness layer and inverse the selection <i><b>Shift+Ctrl+I </b></i>(it will automatically select the darker areas of the image). Perhaps we can introduce Feather to the selection > <i><b>0.5~2 pixels</b></i> to further smoothen the sharpening process.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-03_081212013033.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-03_081212013539.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-04_081212013121.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-04_081212013609.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Next, apply <i><b>Filter > Sharpen > Unsharp Mask.</b></i><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-05_081212013211.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-05_081212013643.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
Lastly, convert the image back to RGB mode (<i><b>Image > Mode > RGB color</b></i>)<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-05a_081212013235.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-05a_081212013720.jpg" /></a><br />
<u><b></b></u><br />
<u><b>Comparisons:</b></u><br />
<i>*For step 2) and 3), a higher level of Unsharp Mask and of the same settings have been used to make the effect more evident for comparison purposes.</i><br />
<br />
<b>Original image:</b><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-06_081212013258.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-06_081212013755.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
1) High pass sharpened image (check out our <a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/blog.php?idblog=b1000056" target="_blank">High Pass Sharpening</a> tutorial here):<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-07_081212013318.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-07_081212013829.jpg" /></a><br />
I’ve tried to recapture the same depth of sharpness, to enable comparison between the next 2 methods. Color changed slightly, and artifacts are now more visible, not feasible for processing photographs or scans.<br />
<br />
2) Unsharp Mask in RGB mode (without lightness selection):<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-08_081212013335.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-08_081212013902.jpg" /></a><br />
Color still show changes and edges are too contrasting. White edges seem to extrude from edges of objects and dark edges are overly thick.<br />
<br />
3) Unsharp mask in Lab mode (with Lightness selection):<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-big-09_081212013353.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/jan0801-400-09_081212013933.jpg" /></a><br />
The same setting of unsharp mask filter has been applied but the drawbacks or concerns of previous comparisons are not visible. It is able to produce a sharpened effect, albeit a more balanced one. Therefore Lab mode sharpening is more favorable.<br />
<br />
You might want to minimize in-camera sharpening or avoid sharpening the image in your RAW file converter. Instead, sharpen the image during post production using Photoshop's Lab mode sharpening method. Although it is not much of a difference to the naked eye (especially when the image is small), the computer reads every pixels. It is the tiny details like this that collectively increase the overall quality of an image.<br />
<br />
Note: This sharpening method works paticularly well on scenic images!<br />

A Tilt-Shift lens enables you to rotate the lens against the image plane, hence “tilt”, and also “shift”. These movements of the lens create an optical illusion where scenes appear wide and dramatic with objects in it looking miniature. The effect is achieved by focusing on a part of the image and blurring out its surroundings.<br />
<br />
Using Photoshop, let’s see how we can mimic the images shot with a Tilt-Shift lens.<br />
<br />
<b>Before & After</b><br />
<div align="center"></div><table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1"><tbody>
<tr> <td align="center"><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3763657_original_091230214701.jpg" target="_blank"> <img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3763657_original_091231030025.jpg" width="250" /></a> </td> <td><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_10Final_091231040430.jpg" target="_blank"> <img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_10Final_091231030552.jpg" width="250" /> </a> </td> </tr>
</tbody> </table><br />
<a name='more'></a>This technique doesn't work for all photos, so try to pick the right ones. Photographs with miniature-looking objects are usually taken from the top, so images that usually work best are those with elevated angles. Also, photos that contain people are the most interesting.<br />
<br />
1. Open image in Photoshop and create a duplicate copy. Next, enter Quick Mask Mode (Q). Image ID: <a href="http://www.123rf.com/photo_3763657.html?referredBy=fai&src=123rffai" target="_blank">3763657 </a>© Valeriy Ivanov 123rf.com<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3763657_original_091230214701.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3763657_original_091231030025.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_01_091230214824.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_01_091231030119.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
2. Set your Foreground and Background colors to black and white respectively (D). Then select the Gradient tool (G) and use 'Reflected Gradient'.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_02_091230214845.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_02_091231050715.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
3. Whilst holding down the Shift-key, click and drag a line upwards starting from where you want your focus point to be, and your end point, and this will prepare a layer where the blur transition takes effect. For this part, you might have to try a few times to get a good result (If you're not satisfied with the outcome, just hit undo and try again till you think it's right).<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_03_091230214945.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_03_091231050809.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
4. Once done, you will see that the area where you've applied your gradient has turned red - The strongest being at your main focus area, slowly fading off as it moves further away in the image's background.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_04_091231051245.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_04_091231050837.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
5. Now that you've selected the area you wanted, tap (Q) again to switch from Quick Mask Mode to Standard Mode. The areas that are selected will be the parts that will be blurred out.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_05_091231051331.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_05_091231050903.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
6. Now go to Filter > Blur > Lens Blur and adjust the Radius to determine how blur the photo will be. I set mine to 20. This area is subjective and differs from photo to photo, so tweak it until it looks just about right to you. However, make sure not to overdo it.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_06_091231051353.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_06_091231050928.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
7. Tap on Ctrl/Cmd+(D) to clear the selection.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_07_091231051410.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_07_091231050952.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
8. Now we adjust the colors and lighting, which is usually bright and contrasted. We will first add a new adjustment layer for Hue/Saturation (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Hue/Saturation). Slightly increase the saturation. I set mine to +25.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_08_091231051431.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_08_091231051016.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
9. Okay now let’s create another adjustment layer for the Curves. (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves). Here are my settings.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_09_091231051456.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_09_091231051038.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
10. To make the effect more obvious, crop (C) the image slightly. And we're done!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_10Final_091231040430.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Image_10Final_091231030552.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />

We are going to mask the sky as we will be creating our own sky. You may use the Magic Wand Tool. Otherwise, apply the Pen Tool and create vector paths along the landscape. Once complete, click on the Create Mask icon.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2_091231052709.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2_091231052545.jpg" /></a><br />
Create a new layer. Using the Gradient Tool, drag and create a gradient with these two colors - #003445, #000b2e. To set the colors, look for the color palettes at the Tools bar or the Color box. Click on the first palette (Foreground) and the Color Picker settings will appear and key in the first color code. Then do the same with the second palette (Background) for the second color.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3_091231052737.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/3_091231052622.jpg" /></a><br />
Create another layer and fill it with black. Then, go to Filter > Render > Noise (Amount: 5%; Gaussian; Monochromatic). Go to <i>Image > Adjustments > Levels</i> to adjust the levels of this layer. Adjust to Input Levels: 0, 0.65, 255 - to reduce the amount of white dots. Set the Blend mode as “Screen”. This acts as stars in the sky.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/4a_091231052756.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/4a_091231052636.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
We can also add in different star sizes simply by duplicating this layer, and then scaling it bigger. Further adjust the levels to reduce the amount of bigger stars.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/5_091231053032.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/5_091230220109.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Changing the landscape's color and brightness.</b><br />
Having prepped the sky, the mountain landscape now looks a bit too bright for night. So, we are going to reduce brightness by adjusting the curves (Go to <i>Image > Adjustments > Curves</i>). Do this whilst the “landscape” layer is selected.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/6_091231053104.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/6_091230220137.jpg" /></a><br />
Notice that there are still some sunset hues on the mountain? Select those areas, and then feather the selections at <i>Select > Feather.</i> Proceed to change the Hue/Saturation (Go to <i>Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation</i>). Here’s my choice of settings. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/7_091231053140.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/7_091230220205.jpg" /></a><br />
The color of the lake doesn't really reflect the color of the sky. So I created a new layer, and then from the base of the layer, click and drag a soft gradient using the same colors of the sky. Change the Blend mode to “Color” and set layer opacity to 50%.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/8_091231053220.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/8_091230220229.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Planning the aurora's pattern and perspective.</b><br />
Draw guidelines on how you want to pan out the aurora effect. I'm going to create separate layers for each of the lines - naming it “left”, “middle” and “right”.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/9_091231053259.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/9_091230220253.jpg" /></a><br />
We shall start with “right” first. Hide the other 2 lines. Go to <i>Filter > Blur > Motion Blur.</i> Settings may defer slightly but here’s mine - Angle: 80°; Distance: 50 pixels.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/10_091231053330.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/10_091230220316.jpg" /></a><br />
Create duplicate copies of “right” (about two or three layers) and merge them together. This will increase its opacity after being blurred.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/11_091231053407.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/11_091230220335.jpg" /></a><br />
Click on the masking icon, and mask the top off using a soft black Brush.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/12a_091230212111.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/12a_091230220357.jpg" /></a><br />
Reset the color palette (D), and create a new layer as “right-rays”.<br />
Fill in White, and then go to <i>Filter > Render > Fibers.</i> Apply these settings - Variance: 15; Strength: 4.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13_091230212814.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13_091230220422.jpg" /></a><br />
Next, go to <i>Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur</i>. Set Radius at 5 pixels.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13a_091230212154.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13a_091230220447.jpg" /></a><br />
<i><br />
</i>Then, go to <i>Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. </i>Set Distance at 235 pixels.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13b_091230212214.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13b_091230220526.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13c_091230212344.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13c_091230220559.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Change Blend mode to “Screen”.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13d_091230212427.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13d_091230220636.jpg" /></a><br />
Transform this layer so effect fits the image’s perspective. <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13e_091230212452.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13e_091230220658.jpg" /></a><br />
Adjust the levels.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13f_091230212523.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13f_091230220718.jpg" /></a><br />
Merge “right” and “right-rays” together. When merged, the Blend mode of the new layer will return to “Normal” resulting in the reappearance of the dark, black areas. Just set the Blend mode back to “Screen”.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13g_091230212614.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13g_091230220745.jpg" /></a><br />
Draw a rough selection on how you envisioned the aurora's shape, feather it…<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13h_091230212632.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13h_091230220814.jpg" /></a><br />
… and mask it away.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13i_091231054216.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/13i_091231053636.jpg" /></a> <br />
Moving on to “middle”.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14_091231054239.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14_091231053736.jpg" /></a><br />
Apply <i>Filter > Blur > Motion Blur</i>. Here are my Motion Blur settings...<br />
<br />
When complete, duplicate the layer a few times and merge them together for increased opacity.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14a_091231054256.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14a_091231053801.jpg" /></a><br />
Mask off the excessive areas. Try to mold it into similar shape, as below: <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14b_091231054325.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14b_091231053826.jpg" /></a> <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14c_091231054346.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/14c_091231053902.jpg" /></a> <br />
For “left”, I applied the methods similar to “right, but created larger gaps on my Filter layer (see below steps 3 to 5). Once I’ve merged my “left” and “left-rays” layers, I further tweaked my settings at “Levels” for a softer look (see step 6). <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/15_100104051948.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/15_100104051635.jpg" /><br />
</a> <br />
Once done, we can merge all 3 layers “left”, “middle”, and “right” together. Rename it as “aurora”. Again, set the Blend mode back to “Screen”.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/16_091231054427.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/16_091231054104.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<b>Next up, applying colors to the aurora.</b><br />
Create a new layer as “color”. Using a soft Brush, draw streams of lines like this:<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/17_091231054456.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/17_091231054128.jpg" /></a> <br />
Next, apply <i>Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. </i><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/18_091230213130.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/18_091230221243.jpg" /></a><br />
Then, change its Blend mode to “Overlay”, and set opacity to 80%.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/18a_091230213206.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/18a_091230221306.jpg" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Create reflections on the lake.</b><br />
Duplicate “aurora”, flip it, and give it a little perspective. Set opacity to 40%.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/19_091230213225.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/19_091230221330.jpg" /></a><br />
Duplicate “color”, flip it. Erase those areas that touched the mountains. Set opacity to 65%.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/19a_091230213251.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/19a_091230221352.jpg" /></a><br />
We can further reduce the brightness and introduce some more blue to the image:<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/20_091230213325.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/20_091230221415.jpg" /></a><br />
In my final image, I've altered the contrasts and hues of the image, and strengthened the shine of the stars. For an extra touch, I’ve added some clouds at the center to enhance the overall look and feel of the image.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/final_100103204341.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/final_100103204223.jpg" /></a>123RFhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06733839267570500185noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2820646876312045355.post-15495181483364090552010-09-09T05:51:00.001+08:002010-09-15T15:20:46.839+08:00123RF Tutorial : Recolor Black & White PhotographIn this tutorial... we are going to apply the Brush Tool, make selections and create multiple Adjustment Layers to add color onto a black & white image. By using Adjustment Layers, we can make modifications anyhow, anytime throughout the process. Note however that time and patience is needed during coloring in order to achieve better results. If you want good results, using Layer Masks will save you a lot of time.<br />
<b>Before & After:</b><br />
<table align="middle" border="0" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="0" style="width: 100%;"><tbody>
<tr> <td><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_med_091231051821.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_meda_091231051724.jpg" width="250" /></a></td> <td><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_final_091231051856.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_finala_091230225211.jpg" width="250" /></a></td> </tr>
</tbody> </table><div align="center"></div>Let's try the technique using the below image. Image ID: <a href="http://www.123rf.com/photo_2376311.html?referredBy=fai&src=123rffai" target="_blank">2376311 </a>© iofoto 123RF.com <br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<b>Step 1</b><br />
Open image. Duplicate the image. Next, create a new blank layer. Let's name this layer “Girl-Skin”. Fill layer with color using the Paint Bucket Tool (G). Pick a color closest to skin tone using the Color Picker. Later, change the Blend Mode to Color.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_med_091231051821.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/2376311_meda_091231051724.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_2_100105230645.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_2_100105230608.jpg" /></a> <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_3_100105230736.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_3_100105230708.jpg" /></a><br />
Next, click on the Vector Mask icon situated at the bottom of the Layers palette. Click on Ctrl/Cmd+Backspace to invert the masking layer. You will see that image has returned to black and white on screen. Start masking the area of the model's skin using the Brush Tool (B) and the skin color will appear.<br />
If your layer mask is black in color, then the color of your brush would have to be the opposite i.e. white in order for the effect to take place. If you've made a mistake, simply brush the area again but this time, switch your brush's color to black i.e. the same color as your layer mask.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_4_091230213616.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_4a_091230222735.jpg" /></a><br />
You can use larger a brush size to recover the B&W background. When it comes to finer areas which require more careful detailing, smaller and softer brush size will be a more suitable option for masking.<br />
<i>Note: Remember to adjust the Opacity, and the Hardness level of the Brush for softer masking edge.</i><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_5_091230213639.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_5a_091230222808.jpg" /></a><br />
The parts that I've circled have finer details, so we must be more patient and perhaps spend some time to remove the unwanted skin color.<br />
<b>Step 2 </b><br />
Once we're done coloring the model's skin, I then created a new layer to work on the hair and repeated the same steps. Do the same with the assessories. Pick a color of your choice for both hair and accessories. Plan and work on coloring the different parts one layer at a time.<br />
<table border="0" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="1" style="width: 100%;"><tbody>
<tr> <td align="center" style="width: 50%;"><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_6_091230213710.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_6a_091230222903.jpg" width="250" /></a></td> <td align="center" style="width: 50%;"><a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_7_091230213735.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_7a_091230222956.jpg" width="250" /></a></td> </tr>
</tbody> </table><b>Step 3</b><br />
For the remaining areas of the model, we can adjust the colors using the various options from the Adjustment Layers. It allows us to modify and change the colors if needed. Do this by clicking on the Adjustment Layer icon at the bottom of the Layers Palette. Always press Ctrl/Cmd+Backspace to invert the masking, so that it won't affect other parts of the image and only mask out the area that you want. We can thus proceed to color the model using the same method.<br />
For the eyes, I click on the adjustment layer and chose to tweak my color settings using the Color Balance option. Invert the adjustment layer and then apply the brush to mask out the model's eyes. That's easy, right? :)<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_8_091231052057.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_8a_091231052013.jpg" /></a><br />
On the image layer, I selected the area around the mouth quickly using the Lasso Tool (L). Next, I created another adjustment layer and named it 'lips'. This time, I chose the Curves setting option and tweaked the settings until I get the red I wanted. Invert the adjustment layer. Then apply the brush to remove the access color.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_9_091230213814.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_9a_091230224553.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_10_091230213829.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_10a_091230224617.jpg" /></a><br />
<b>Tip:</b><br />
Adjustment Layers will let us modify or adjust the color anytime so you can tweak the colors once you’ve completed painting. This is very useful because we don’t usually get the color right the first time and would need to make adjustments when we’re done.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_11_100105231057.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_11_100105230950.jpg" /></a><br />
<b></b><br />
<b>Step 4</b><br />
Once done with masking, we can arrange and compile all the model's layers under Layer Groups. I named mine “Girl”. Layer Groups are great for managing and organizing your layers.<br />
To create a Layer Group, select the layers you want to include. Then go to Layer > Group Layers, and the selected layers will be automatically placed in a newly created folder. For a new Layer Group folder with no selected layers, click the New Group Button (the folder icon) at the bottom of the Layers Palette. <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_12_091230213857.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_12a_091230224800.jpg" /></a><br />
<b>Step 5</b><br />
Next attempt will be the two men and background. We will still use the same easy way to produce color for them. We'd only need to be extra careful when comes to details. Zoom-in as big as you can when coloring. Also, remember that you can always adjust and change the color using Adjustment Layers. After that, simply group the layers into your respective Layer Groups to avoid messy layers.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_13_091230213914.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_13a_091230224839.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_14_091230214002.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_14a_091230224927.jpg" /></a><br />
<b>Step 6</b><br />
Once the basic coloring is done, we now enhance the mood of the photo. Use Adjustment Layers like Curves, Hue/Saturation and Color Balance to boost and enhance the color of the photo. Here's mine but you don't have to follow my settings... feel free to explore and tweak the settings until you are satisfied with the results that you want.<br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_15_091230214027.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_15a_091230225008.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_16_091230214054.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_16a_091230225032.jpg" /></a><br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_17_091230214132.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_17a_091230225051.jpg" /></a> <br />
<a href="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_18_091230214156.jpg" target="_blank"><img border="0" src="http://www.123rf.com/blog/images/Tut13_911_18a_091230225105.jpg" /></a><br />
